After pulling 3 to 4 feet off the spool, and slowly pulling the tippet though the rubber jaws of the micrometer, we could clearly see the material was not an exact uniform diameter. This seems to apply for tippets 3X or smaller. Consider your fly size and weight. If a long length is under, does the fly not follow the leader under when picked up, followed by a “pop” and some significant surface disturbance. However, if we had taken the time to test 30 materials in three different sizes, 50 times each per strand and per knot, you'd be reading the "2012 Tippet Shootout" in a 2020 issue. There’s a boundary for every situation. Tippet breaking strengths are stronger than ever these days. If you are using small-diameter tippets and a small dry fly, the surface tension won't usually allow either nylon or fluorocarbon to break through the surface. I’ve just entered world of fly fishing, and really enjoy your comprehensive detailing/instruction. Right or wrong, here were the factors in my decision to use fluoro: — Above, you said that nylon takes more than 5-15 years to bio-degrade. Instead we had to rely primarily on numerical data. A much bigger factor is surface tension. I use tippet rings on the ends of my sighter, so I can change out tippet sections and sighters. I also don’t use them in the middle of my tippet section the way Alex describes his setup above. So let’s fix that. Yup, you tie them together, at least a short piece of the tippet is tied to the end of the leader. Cliff notes answered a question about nylon vs floro for dries. The currents then act evenly across the entirety of the tippet section under the water, improving the dead drift and lending more control over the rig. I am very concerned about the dwindling amounts of water we have to fish, we need to protect it as much as possible and if this is one little thing we can do as anglers, then it should be done by all. Give a Gift
I was used to it. When fishing streamers or wet flies on a swing, there’s not much need for long tippets. One of the ways RIO tests suppleness is to cut lengths of monofilament at exactly 6 inches, and then hang them over the counter. Fly fishermen often carry multiple sizes of tippet to accommodate different scenarios, and tippet can be used to build a leader in a pinch by connecting thicker pieces to thinner pieces to form a rough taper. How to deliver meat & potatoes to hungry trout. To get started, click the link below to visit mymagnow.com and learn how to access your digital magazine. In general, the fluorocarbons were stiffer than the nylons. In 1966 I purchased an Orvis leader tying kit which I believe was made up of spools of Mason hard mono. This is why we shift down in tippet size to get a more flawless, drag-free drift with a dry fly or nymph. The best days start by learning what most trout in the river are doing. I also like the attachment knots for droppers that you have mentioned previously although I haven’t tried them yet. That matters, especially to competition anglers. >> Read More Reviews On Trouthunter Fluorocarbon Tippet, 50m, 6X Here << Some streamer designs can do the same thing. The first four can be, as we said in heavy industry, engineered out. The differences were not huge, but we gathered enough evidence to declare nylon the clear winner in knot strength. Generally, I use the thickest tippet I can get away with but still have good movement to the fly. And these two qualities determine a leader’s turnover power and the amount of potential drag . (e.g. TROUTHUNTER 50m Spool Fluorocarbon Tippet in Size 6x - 3.7lb Tensile Strength. Keystone Fly Fishing Guide Book Purchase here to support Troutbitten. Same with streamers. Tuck. For example, 6X does not mean the tippet is 6-pound-test, it means that tippet diameter is .005 inches. Manufacturers regularly claim that fluorocarbon is nearly invisible underwater. Soon all of the tippet materials properties will be in your memory and you will know exactly what length, what size, etc. We, (fly anglers especially), should be stewards of our environment and should show the best practices for others to follow and emulate as much as possible. Personally, I don’t like the effect of a sunken leader. Simply burning the gasoline on the way there is contributing to a larger problem. I have been fishing three fly rigs for forty years and have learned to adjust the lengths of the droppers based on dropper size, fly size and weight. However, almost every expert fly fisher we know uses fluorocarbon, despite its higher cost. We tried examining both monofilament and fluorocarbon side-by-side underwater, but to our eyes, there didn't seem to be a huge difference. Last point on tippet thickness. Thank you!! If the light is behind the fish, then light is likely reflecting off the tippet material and the reflective qualities become more important in regard to visibility. I take it that was intentional. After the switch to tippet rings six years ago the same principal holds. I was having difficulty with the fly sinking using fluorocarbon, and “dunking” the fly before making a new cast. . It’s just my theory and unprovable by me as I lack the scientific methods, high speed video and laboratory setting, to prove. Hypothetically, do you believe that a more supple tippet would impart less drag on flies? . We took the time, and after a month oftesting more than 30 products and tying 2,500 knots, we have come to some conclusions. From our own fishing experiences, especially in salt water, it seems that fluorocarbon is slightly more abrasion resistant, but nothing is going to hold up to a 10-pound bonefish or 25-pound permit running through coral. There are general formulas for matching tippet size to fly size, and that’s a good place to start. I nymph with fluorocarbon because it tangles less and because it’s much more durable against things like rocks and split shot than nylon. So share your own discoveries or disagreements in the comments section below. But further tests we did with a rod rigged up out on the lawn confirmed that the tippet-to-tippet knot broke more often than the tippet-to-fly knot. 5X - 4.5 LB. No doubt, the data collected would have been more accurate, but we did the best we could with the technology we had available. Some knots are easier to tie than others, and most anglers prefer to stick to the easiest knots, even if they are weaker. For the ultimate tippet-to-fly connection and special situations we recommend these, but for general angling the improved clinch is hard to beat. If you look at the manufacturer’s listed breaking strength, you’ll find that TroutHunter offers the strongest 3X fluorocarbon at 8.6 lb, then RIO Fluoroflex Plus at 8.5 lb, and Scientific Anglers at 7.1 lb. I’ve received countless questions about my thoughts regarding euro lines and mono rigs. Hobie's MirageDrive 360 pedal propulsion system offers ultimate kayak control with more... Yes I catch two fish at a time occasionally. That allows for plenty of motion on the fly, even with tiny nymphs. Seaguar Inizx to a tippet ring, and then 5x (and occasionally 6x) Varivas fluoro. In some situations, I do degrease perhaps the first foot of the tippet next to the fly, but nothing more. We tried to use the best average we could and in this case we averaged RIO Powerflex 2X at .228 mm, which came in just under the industry standard of 2X, or .229 mm. More importantly, competition anglers choose thin diameter tippets like 6X or 7X because thinner lines slice through the water better — they incur less drag. I know where you’re coming from. Perhaps an hour later, and I was sold. Breaking strengths for fluorocarbon decreased by 3 to 5 percent. A 6X tippet will have the same diameter as the small end of a 6X leader. I know that tippet preferences are personal. I’ll continue my ban and perhaps my little gesture will inspire others and save my streams for a little longer than others. Picture this: a #18 Blue Winged Olive tied to 3X tippet has no freedom of movement. I recently read in Jonathan White’s book, Nymphing the New Way, that he prefers Stroft, a supple nylon material. While this theory makes sense, we were unable to come up with a good method to independently confirm this. As a general overview, tippets with higher “X” numbers are thinner, so a 6X tippet is thinner than a 3X tippet. We did our best to keep everything "apples to apples" but there were numerous variables to juggle at any given time. For example, in several cases, Stroft or Frog Hair had the strongest breaking strengths, but we had to handicap them for being slightly over the industry's average diameter. Size - Break Strength 0X - 12 LB. In the end, we just went by our gut feeling after handling these materials for long periods of time, running our tests on the machine, and tying all those knots. Yes, long and thin tippets will get you a little deeper, but depths with swinging or stripped flies is more easily achieved with weight, casting angles and retrieve speeds. Of course, that's with our eyes. “I’d like to try your fluorocarbon now please,” I said sheepishly. James Anderson worked with his father George and the rest of the staff at The Yellowstone Angler to produce this report. There are designations of 0x through 8X and the smaller the number the heavier the breaking strength. If cost were not an issue, an Instron tester, the world's foremost machine for testing tensile strength would have been the best for collecting our data. 4X - 5.5 LB. If you walked up to me and asked for a Harvey style slack line leader for a three wt rod, 4X tippet, 11′ long, I would hand you a tied leader within five minutes. Many good fly fishers have found the stiffness of fluorocarbon to be an advantage in obtaining casting accuracy, especially with fine tippets like 5X, 6X, and 7X. Ever felt like your leader was doing the hurky-jerky during the cast? I don’t know if that’s true, but it’s what I’ve read. I’ve probably bought and fished everything in the fly shop at some point. Seaguar's web site tells us that water has a refractive index of 1.33, fluorocarbon has a refractive index of 1.42, and nylon has a refractive index of 1.62. Good point about familiarity. Delivered as promised. I left a lot more snags and flies on the river bottom. 2) Improper dropper length or size. I would enjoy hearing your opinion on them. In straight-pull break strength, when we averaged the figures, nylon and fluorocarbon were about equal. When picking up for the next cast, a sinking tippet tends to draw the fly down into the surface, sometimes creating a pop as it goes under and quickly comes back up, flying off toward the backcast. 5 out of 5 stars (1) Total Ratings 1, $39.99 New. The X system itself can be confusing to beginners. 4)Trees (and other snags). It’s motion is limited by the stiffness of the 3X. One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting an accurate diameter for each tippet strand. Breaking strength isn’t the only consideration when you are tying a knot. I throw that out later in the trash. However, dead drift nymph fishing or using old school streamer tactics can greatly benefit from longer tippet sections. As a practical matter, most of the time your tippet won't be getting soaked for more than a few minutes at a time, so unless trolling is part of your program, we felt this was non-issue. The five reasons that cause leader tangles in multifly rigs and their solutions to my way of thinking follow. It has a tendency not to hold the knot well because of the two dissimilar diameters. The stiffness of fluoro and manageability in regards to tangles is something I’ve never personally considered. As I wrote above, though, I don’t use 6x for nymphing unless the flies are really small. How long should the tippet section be? Here are the knots I prefer and why. The diameters, breaking strengths, and performance just weren’t accurate—or up to par with our own rigorous standards. Also, a material with thinner diameter is by nature more supple, and hangs lower than the others. Any advantage an angler can use to get a fish to strike is worth a try. While less than ideal, this gave all brands a chance to strut their stuff. It took no time at all. And I respect that decision. It drags less and sinks quicker. Within my own twenty-five years of fly fishing, I’ve seen fly shop wall space grow to include tippet spools of nylon and fluorocarbon in all X sizes (sometimes in half sizes too), with most manufacturers offering multiple options for stiffness and breaking strength in each diameter. #18 BWO Comparadun on 3X tippet. But the tippet should also be thin enough to allow the fly to move at the knot. We had not anticipated putting so much emphasis on the knots until we noticed that once knots were introduced into the equation, breaking strength immediately decreased by 20 to 30 percent, and sometimes by as much as 50 percent. It may seem quite a stretch to believe that 6X can be more drag-free than 4X. I don’t like them larger. If you are in the market for a micrometer, try to find one that reads in mm. I discovered that fluorocarbon has an uncanny ability to untangle, and that provided a significant advantage over nylon. While getting a perfect drag-free drift is the key to technical dry-fly fishing and nymph fishing, good anglers can usually find ways to induce the necessary slack they need to get a dead-drift by mending, feeding out line, or using casting techniques such as a reach cast or slack-line cast. That’s what matters. I tried using size 6x regular mono for nymphing and I lost too many flies to the rock Gods. For our final shootout, we limited the results to what we determined were the top three fluorocarbons, and the top three nylons. And that’s way more synthetic material than a year’s worth of tippet. Agree 110%. Obviously if a material is substantially larger (or smaller) than the advertised X size, it will test significantly stronger or weaker, which we took into consideration when rating materials. Like I said above, though, my goal is to land the biggest fish of my life and I don’t want to be under-gunned. This article is part of the Walk Along series. So for dead drifting, I use tippets long enough that just one diameter is under the water (two, at the most). A 5X tippet is considered a good standard for most trout-fishing situations. Experienced fly fishers feel that superior abrasion resistance leads to fewer lost fish, and decreased visibility underwater leads to more takes, especially in critical conditions where the fish are getting a clear look at your fly. For this comparison I chose to look at each brand’s 3X tippet material. This happens to me in pools at times, but I never fish lakes. I like tippet rings a lot too. The purpose of a tapered leader is to make smooth transition from fly line to leader. Note: this article is not intended to be a comprehensive write-up for all things tippet. Visibility. And while this is also one of the most common questions I’ve fielded through the years, it has a complex answer that I’ve never tackled in an article. In 6X tippet material, this can mean a full pound more strength than a surgeon’s knot. Fly size divided by 3 gives approx. Again, I recommend going as long as you can get away with. To get truly accurate data worthy of a scientific study, we feel that each strand of tippet, and each knot should be tested a minimum of 50 times in order to reach accurate averages for breaking strengths. More than 25 years later, George and I knew we needed a more scientific way to test tippet materials. Today, the best 6X tippets have tested nearly double that, with an average breaking strength of 3.78 pounds. We wish we could have tested everyone's knot strength; we simply didn't have the time. Since most anglers already know the clinch knot, the double clinch is an easy knot to add to the repertoire. Use 5X or 6X instead. If you are using 6X tippet, you want the knot to be as strong as possible because you have no margin for error, but if you are using 15-pound-test fluorocarbon, a weaker knot is still pretty strong. Yes, I fish multi dry fly rigs with a slack line presentation, and.. So when the shiny ads for fluorocarbon monofilaments appeared in my fly fishing magazines, I paid no attention but to chuckle and turn the page. But by using a tippet ring you can add any size tippet to it. Same with a heavy nymph leader 9′, 3X, for a six wt rod, and so on. Read: Dry flies need slack. Hope these words will help your readers. (And the nylon will still be there in 500 years). Fish are cold-blooded, so their body temperature reflects that of the water in which they swim. Over the years, people who have tested monofilaments have come to some general conclusions that we found difficult to prove one way or the other. Making adjustments is the key to consistent fly fishing. Water absorption. . The first problem we faced with collecting data was how many variables were involved with testing tippet products and tying knots. [Also keep in mind that refraction is the change in light direction as it passes through a material. And when casting nymphs on a tight line, the weight of the nymphs or split shot does most of the casting work, so tippet turnover is not an issue. In addition to all the laboratory-style tests, we were able to use these materials on the water the summer of 2011, and of course we have fished several of these for years now, providing us with a baseline of knowledge to help judge overall tippet performance. And ten foot tippet sections are impossibly inaccurate. Whether fly fishing for trout, bass, steelhead or salmon, in rivers or lakes, you will find RIO has the right freshwater tippet material for you. Our own experiences with fluorocarbon in both fresh and salt water seem to confirm that fluorocarbon does make a difference, especially in stillwaters and salt water. And the easiest place to start is to know your distances. Here are my thoughts on euro nymphing lines vs a Mono Rig. We were also surprised to see that the Davy knot, which is fast to tie and therefore popular in competitive fly-fishing circles, actually tested weaker than a wind knot. Wow. These dense, indestructible nymphs will improve your subsurface game. The polyethylene of the water bottle that I lost on the stream the other day will be in the environment for a very, very long time as well. . Once you’ve tied a 3mm tungsten bead on, can a modest increase in line density really correlate to a a meaningful impact on sink rate? All decisions have a trade off, though. Domenick, Stroft GTM 0.12 is about 4lb breaking strain. It lead me to wonder about the affects of line stiffness on a fly’s drift. When I tie on a #18 or #20 trailer, I often use 6X. Luckily, our friend John Bailey, owner of Dan Bailey's fly shop, provided us with his impressive Chatillon TCD-200 testing machine, which easily costs more than my drift boat. I like slightly stiff, flexible fluorocarbon. From experience we know that fluorocarbon tippet ties well to nylon leaders. I pick up and haul out line wherever/whenever I find it on the river. I can’t imagine how that could work for some of the large and bushy (or even medium sized) dries that I fish, especially if it’s windy. However we decided to include Frog Hair rather than Dai-Riki GTS, due to Frog Hair's higher breaking strength in 4X and 6X. What size? 5 out of 5 stars (1) Total Ratings 1, $24.95 New. Fluorocarbon Breaking Strength Comparison. A decade ago I learned about euro nymphing, and I started fishing and adapting the Mono Rig to my own style. If everyone took your advice, we will have tons of Fluorocarbon in our waterways one little piece at a time. We tried to simulate this kind of abrasion resistance by rubbing materials back and forth (with equal pressure) over different grits of sandpaper. That’s interesting. Four doubles last season on multi dry fly rigs during fall hatches. And learn to accurately judge the distance you are casting. Because this is fishing, there are about a hundred different opinions and twice as many variations that work. But in our own fishing experiences we have felt that the fluorocarbons have provided sufficiently strong and reliable knots, especially when we've used a lubricant like lip balm in tying the knots. 2X - 9 LB. So yes, fluorocarbon tippet material is monofilament, and so is the regular stuff we all used until about a fifteen years ago — that’s nylon. Your email address will not be published. The San Diego jam is a cousin to the 16/20 knot, and instructions are at netknots.com. (Likewise, I don’t know that the diameter of tippet matters to the fish either). Too long and too soft of a dropper section will cause extra air drag during the cast which can change the dynamic of the leader during the cast and cause the dreaded hinge during turnover. Do you think 6x flouro holds up better than 6x mono? The double improved clinch is similar to the regular improved clinch—you simply double the material before going through the hook eye. Our Fluorocarbon Trout Tippet provides high strength and abrasion resistance, low underwater visibility and excellent knot strength for fishing in situations where extreme stealth is required. And my friends at TCO tell me that fielding confused questions about tippet is a daily chore. 1) Improper leader construction. Thank you for your helpful information on fly fishing. Likewise, multiple diameters of monofilament (tapered leaders) under the water create the unwelcome situation of a leader being pushed around by varying degrees. Interesting response, lots of “I’s”, one “We”, stewardship may not be not your strong suit. For the refusals, it is certainly possible the fish was spooked by the light reflecting off the tippet, or that the fish is able to see the tippet itself. I had a stockpile of the stuff, and it was much cheaper. Of course, if you don’t want to customize your … I do council friends to use flouro responsibly. Fish are spooked and they refuse. Perhaps down the road someone will come up with a better test for abrasion resistance. 99 So there really is not a substantial difference between nylon and fluorocarbon, especially when most anglers are just using fluorocarbon for the tippet. One of our favorites, the improved blood knot proved to be strong as well, and is noticeably smaller than either the J knot or a triple surgeon's knot. Which also brings up the question of preferred knots for fluoro connections, which knots are the most reliable? Good ones cost between $200-$400. I go right up to it and use the longest tippet section I can still control with precision. I use it here in Alaska for all submerged fishing. Flexibility. True-to-spec X sizes; Sizes: 7X – 20-lb. On one warm fall day the plastic clasp of my tippet stack broke. If price and knot strength are priorities, our shootout proved nylon monofilaments are runaway winners. A great tip (excuse the pun!!) Nylon worked well for me. Break strength and knot strength for the best fluorocarbons, although not quite up to the best nylons, have proved to be adequate, as has the overall reliability of using nylon leaders with fluorocarbon tippets. Bill, I used “I” because you asked about MY use of fluorocarbon. Fish on! That one terrifies even me. This is one of the reasons I am enamoured with tippet rings. I lost every spool and was left with no terminal tackle. A highly technical formulation of the nylon copolymer manufacturing process has resulted in this prodigious strength increase, without compromising knot strength or suppleness. There are three variations, the tippet knot, a loop knot, and a hook knot. That is exactly what I don’t want for nymphs. However, we know other anglers prefer more supple monofilaments like Dai-Riki Dynamic, or TroutHunter nylon, that more easily flow with swirling currents. Here in the US we designate an "X" to our tippet sizes, based on thousandths of an inch. Great value 50 meter Spools. 3x to 6x. Thank you for all the time you put into writing your columns and to your readers for joining the discussions. Using the term “monofilament” for nylon is a holdover from way back when single strand polymers were first introduced and took over for gut leaders. For the first round of our shootout we focused on tippet diameter and straight-pull break strength. For fluorocarbon, the top three materials based on average breaking strength and correct diameter were Seaguar Grand MAX, TroutHunter, and RIO Fluoroflex Plus. The materials that had larger diameters, yet lower breaking strengths, went to the bottom of the list. Join Troutbitten and follow along. Photo by Pat Burke. That allows for plenty of motion on the fly, even with tiny nymphs. It’s a great point. Excellent article. I know the focus is not on Stillwater but when fishing any floating fly on a flat surface the tippet next to the fly must be degreased so it will sink and not create a distraction on the surface next to the fly.
